The specialty of the region is bogana. It is milk lamb and whole potatoes, cooked in a pot. It is baked for several hours in a wood-fired oven and wins over even non-fans of this particular meat, as thanks to the way it is cooked, it is hard to tell that it is lamb.
The second tasting station cannot be any other than the gouges. It is a traditional handmade pasta made from flour, water and salt. The dish is first sprinkled with grated local manuromyzithra and then with hot oil. It takes a special technique to succeed and the secret lies in the quality of the mizithra.
Of course, we cannot leave artichokes out of the list of favorite choices from Argolida cuisine. This particular plant is the main product of cultivation of the inhabitants of the Irian area of Nafplion. They are made into a salad, cooked or eaten raw, stuffed with meat or vegetables, cooked in oil or even fasting. You can even enjoy them as a sweet jam!
In a short distance from our accommodation is active the cheese dairy of Triantafyllou & Sia S. A. , located at the 5th km. Argos - Karya Argolida. Since 1968 it has been producing a wide variety of cheese products, with the main products being feta PDO Argos, soft cheese, spicy Gruyere, anthotyro, dry myzithra and milk butter. All products are produced from sheep and goat milk, which is collected daily by the same small local producers. Try the soft cheese that we loved for its rich, buttery taste and smooth texture, as well as yellow cheeses with added aromatic herbs or spices.
Gournopoula is a popular, traditional, summer food of Argolis. This is a pig in the oven, which, after being cooked for several hours, is placed in a warm, glass chamber and sold by the kilo. Its crispy skin, combined with its meat, which has been slow-cooked and practically melts in the mouth, is the ultimate summer snack.
The orange is a trademark of the Argolic plain. The excellent and vitamin-rich fruit has been cultivated in abundance in the prefecture for almost half a century, covering approximately half of domestic production and providing health and well-being to the people of Argolis and beyond. As you tour the prefecture, you will see orchards unfolding around you adorned with this divine and aromatic fruit, the "apple of the Hesperides", which Hercules once stole to perform one of his labors. Try it as it is or in the form of a dessert such as orange pie, jam or even in the form of liqueur.
